Get Higher Conversions: Understanding Customer Anxiety

Posted by LoudMo on March 8th, 2010

Marketing—and especially affiliate marketing—relies heavily on understanding the emotions of a customer in order to convince them to purchase a product.

In order to promote affiliate programs online, affiliates need to fully understand the emotions that persuade customers to stay and purchase a product. At the same time, affiliates must also be able to recognize the emotions that send customers away from a website or landing page without making a single purchase.

If you are trying to promote an affiliate program online, one of the most important emotions to focus on is customer anxiety. The internet has developed a reputation for being unsafe and untrustworthy. Your job, while promoting a pay per install affiliate program, is to make sure that all customers feel safe and protected.

The common internet user feels anxious about their safety on the internet. When they submit credit card information, there is identity theft to worry about. When signing up for a newsletter, there is the threat of SPAM clogging up their mailbox. If a user orders merchandise, they wonder if it will actually be delivered. These are justifiable worries because of the high amount of crooks, scam artists, and hackers online preying on personal information.

To deal with these fears, an affiliate program’s website or landing page should also include anything to reassure customers of their safety. There are several ways to ease customer anxiety, including:

  • Certifications: If you are able to become a certified dealer or get a license or permission that is related to the product you are selling, put these certification symbols in a highly visible location.
  • A privacy policy: The privacy policy does not need to be extremely long and detailed. Simply focus on telling all potential customers that you will not share any of their information.
  • Customer Testimonials: People will trust an affiliate program when there is clear evidence that others have purchased and used the product.
  • An address or phone number: A way of contact can ease a customer’s mind and help them recognize that your product is not just an internet scam.
  • Trust symbols: These show that you conduct business with reliability. Trust symbols can include a Better Business Seal or safe shopping guarantees.
