These are not the only emotions that an affiliate marketer needs to understand. Even if you are able to successfully reduce anxiety and confusion, there is still one more major emotional problem to address: customer alienation.
Alienation, or the feeling of not belonging, can occur for a variety of reasons. These may include: not understanding technical jargon on a website or landing page, feeling as if the product is “not for them”, and feeling as if they are being patronized or “talked down to”.
Luckily, there is an easy solution, make your website or landing page as welcoming and understandable as possible. The trick to this is recognizing the underlying psychological triggers that will make customers feel comfortable. Alienation is typically connected with identity, tribalism, self-esteem and belonging. In order to make your customer feel at ease, here are a few tips:
- Recognizable tone of voice: Make the text or content of your website or landing page clear. Your writing should match the tone of your expected visitor’s values and beliefs.
- Images reflect customer base: If you are marketing an affiliate program targeted towards a certain group, use images to reflect this group. For example, if an affiliate marketer is promoting something related to Twilight, they should use pictures of younger people. If another affiliate marketer is promoting Viagra, they should show pictures of older males.
- Use the language of your customer: Promote an affiliate program with words and terms that the customer may also use. Technical jargon and advanced wording will look too complicated and may deter a visitor from making a purchase.
